The disappointment of Anyone but You!

 

Now I have been a girly girl since I was born, and I live for romcoms. Yet everyone can agree that we haven't been gifted with a good romcom for ages. When this movie was announced many older teens and young adults who have watched the 90s and early 2000s romcoms were somewhat thrilled for this new movie. Sydney Sweeney, who everyone mostly knows from the tv show, Euphoria, were very happy to see her in a romcom movie and knowing her acting skills everyone expected an excellent movie. However, for me that was not the case, at the end of the movie I was feeling a great amount of disappointment and underwhelmed. 

It took me a few weeks to actually watch the movie due to being so busy, yet TikTok had hyped it up to a great amount. Most of the videos were some people describing how this was the best romcom they had ever seen, while others were singing and dancing to the song, Unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield, which was the iconic song in the movie. As we know romcoms are known to be silly, fun and cute, yet this movie to me was insufferably silly. There were some scenes where I was literally on the floor with secondhand embarrassment on what was happening before my own eyes. Let's just say the hiking scene was that for me. 

The one thing the movie was missing was good acting. Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney definitely know how to act because most people have seen them in major roles such as Euphoria and Top Gun: Maverick. For some reason the movie had not executed that very well which was so disappointing for me and others who did not enjoy the movie. In certain scenes, everyone's acting sounded like they were directly reading from some script and other scenes it sounded so forced. Nothing felt real or connected and due to this I didn't connect on an emotional level to the movie. I was so hoping that this movie would be like all the good old romcoms, for example, Notting Hill, How to lose a guy in 10 days, As good as it gets, 13 going on 30, Pretty Woman, 10 things I hate about you and so on. 

                                         

                                                             

What I will say is TikTok was definitely the culprit of making my expectations so high for the movie because of all the rave it was getting. Of course, there were a few scenes that I cooed at and laughed but other than that I was cringing through the rest. To the people who loved it, there is no hate here, everyone has their own opinions, and this was mine on the movie. I respect you and you should respect my view on the movie. My overall rating of the movie would be 5/10, to anyone who hasn't watched the movie yet please don't let this review stop you, maybe you'll love it. 

Anyway, hopefully my dream of a good romcom will finally come one day!
